Difficult People in Life and on the Jobsite

2010
02.24

People that you somehow can not – or wish to never understand .  The “Ted Stevens”  types in the wide wide world.

There are simply those difficult do to say the least do not do what you want them to do – and to say the least you do not know what to do about them – to put it simply and mildly.

Turn the tables.  You do not have to be the victim anytime nor anymore. While you cannot change “difficult people” , as much as you wish and dream – in some manner you can get them out of their shell and somehow communicate with them.

Well perhaps. All in all it is a matter of knowing how to get under their skin , into their mind and mindset when they are behaving “badly”.

Your Boss as the Manager of the Bus

2009

Imagine your boss as the manager and supervisor of a school-bus

Here he is indeed after a careful search and hiring process by the below questionnaire – no expense  ( of the expense and travel accounts )  was spared in the search for accurate testing process for new hires and company presidents.

The much fabled “Xerox PSS Course”  ” Sell me that pen” ,  could be summarized as little more than close to $ 5,000 spent hire or trained monkey all to learn to repeat the phrase – “hmm”

Orwellian Doublespeak on Working Longer Hours for Free

2009
06.19

There are only so many hour in the day that get “wasted” since employees insist on basic habits of eating , sleeping, and even procreating. The belief structure among many management and supervisory types is that these can be simply reduced, if not eliminated by forcing poor workers to work longer and longer hours on in the end unpaid “overtime”. Either be quiet, or you won’t be working here is the mantra so to speak.

To serve these purposes , and to complete the internalizations of the said employee it might be best for him or her not even to refer to these time periods worked for the organization not as unpaid overtime but rather as “commitment to professionalism” or “the reason you get your bonus.”.

Talk about the book 1984 with its Orwellian tales of doublespeak and mind control.

In the end it goes under the guise of “Be glad that you have a job” and management bonuses for their efficiencies at keeping costs and labor costs in line. Reminds you of organized crime who are able to run businesses due to low input costs – the goods have invariably been stolen elsewhere and have low direct costs to the said business.

Some Believe That The Notion of Work is Wrong

2009
03.20

Some believe the false notion that work is a curse. They fail to understand that the command to work was not only implicit in those first instructions about tending the garden , but also in those first instructions about tending the garden , but also in God;s command to subdue the whole earth and take dominions over it. ( Gen 1:29)

Adam Gets a Job

Let us go back to the very beginning . The story is a familiar one. “In the beginning God created”" ( Genesis 1:1)

We see God himself at work creating the heavens and the earth , all creatures great and small and man and women. Seven times during this account in Genesis it is reinstated that god was pleased with his labor. (“God saw that it was good).

As if to emphasize the work involved in creating the world, the second chapter of Genesis begins with God resting. “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing so on the seventh day he rested from his work (Genesis 2:2).

In terms of a job or workplace environment being or becoming hazardous to a worker’s health somehow and many times the numbers do not belay or betray the full set , width and extent of dangers.

Figures do not lie “but liars figger”.  Look at poor Bernie Madoff as an example.  There is a case in point if one could ever be made of how numbers, figures , data and statistics are get confused and misused in the hands of ” experts” or more rightly described downright criminals.  Its not as if the financial industry is full of the most ethical people as well.  It can be justly said that most in the “financial “  or “securities”  have zero ( or little) conscious in any manner.   Its similar to the government official who comes to visit you ( or phones ) with the introduction ” I’m from the government I am here to help you”.

The problem becomes that most people are trusting.  At the worst they trust the data and information which they are given from alleged credible sources.  On top of that these industries are supposed to be tightly controlled and regulated by the agent of society – in this the government body the  The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).  After all if you got a phone call late one night from an individual who claimed , and was supported by a caller id number. that they were calling from the I.R.S. would you not beleive them and take them most seriosuly.

Such is the abuse of power , whether from management types , a governmental agent or Mr. Madoff .

Options in Life and On the Job – Compromise

2008
06.12

The next general form of options available to you “on the job” involves compromise and the art of compromising. In some cultures – most well known the Japanese – conflict is to avoided at all times , conflict is a major taboo and sin – hence most decisions and actions are based on a compromise . On the other extreme occurs when dealing with those where there is at all times a pathological fear of failure , an abject ability to admit one is ever wrong, and coupled with the two previous traits the need to both control others and view any other co-workers who are either competent , have good ideas or suggestions as a direct threat to that person’s job and status within that industry or employment. Guess in what category most managers fall ? If your manager does not , count yourself most fortunate and lucky in life.

In cases of compromise do what you can to be a good influence. This may occur even though you may find that you to continually put up with some things , places or events that you may feel are your about your job. It can be best said- welcome to life.

Options in Life and Work

2008
06.12

There always , at least in theory should be options to your choices in the workplace – should you or shouldn’t you , why and why not ?

First you can “sell out”- that is to do what the job requires and not allow questions of ethics , business or common sense to enter in

For example you are a cashier at a local big box superstore. You are employed (currently or at that moment) as a cashier in the express line up. A customer comes , dallies , and in the end insists that an item from the office equipment and stationary is 50 % off. You know that there are markdowns but unsure of this particular item. The customer insists. You are left with two common sense options – first put the item through promptly. After all there are a number of customers waiting in the express lineup who are getting anxious and fidgety. Option two is to offer the customer to take the item out of her shopping basket for now , or void the order while awaiting notification

Option 3 is to follow the rules . Make the customers in the line wait while another employee checks the price . Next blame ” management” for not providing clear price lists. In the end this is a case of not accepting any responsibility for your actions or your actions leading to poor customer service.

Such an approach seems to be the choice that leads most straight into a career in “management”.

Those that cannot do teach . Those that cannot teach criticize. Those that cannot teach and excel in criticism and as well accept no responsibility for their actions , while blaming others , often have a successful career in “management”
